Northeast Citizen Patrol crime stats and news 02.13.09 (pdf) NOTE: The NECP has adopted a bi-weekly update schedule for the winter. Check back here, at the Eastside Defender, for breaking news and alerts. ==================== 1. State of the Precinct Address. ==================== It is infinitely better to have a few good men than many indifferent ones. —George Washington ------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a very important event that you should attend. There are refreshments, exhibits, and key people from the Second Precinct to talk with. You will also find out what is happening, and what is planned for this year from the Police department. I can’t say how important it is that NE residents make a showing at this event. To earn the right to complain about crime or police issues in NE, you need to be involved. Here is your chance to hear what’s going on in just a couple hours on a Saturday morning. I’ll be bringing a bunch of personal alarms worth $20.00 each and I’ll give you one if you show up. (If you don’t have one yet - honor system.) Also, I’ll have a drawing for some Pepper Spray at the NECP table. Please take time to come. Thank you. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Trouble at Gabby’s once again raises its ugly head. ### Garage break-ins are popular. If you are on an alley with lots of valuables in your garage, take steps to make it as secure as your house. Most people have high deductibles on their homeowners insurance, so a $500 chain saw or bike stolen will come right out of your pocket. I know people that have been struck 3 times and lost many thousands of dollars of work tools. His family is now in danger of losing their insurance all together. Next Minnesota handgun carry permit class is scheduled for March 21st. More details here: www.gunpermittraining.com If you’ve been thinking of it, now is the time. If you have never shot a gun, and would like to have a basic introduction to firearms, let me know and I’ll organize a class for that too. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Second Precinct Crime Stats ° 1000 blk 3rd Av NE: Suspects entered business through secured service door, stole over $2300, dart machine/game valued at $1500 ° 2800 blk Johnson NE: Suspect wearing black scarf over his mouth, brandishing knife robbed pharmacy of prescription narcotics ° 1000 blk 22nd Av NE: Victim reported man entered unlocked doors of home around 3AM, grabbed, choked her, then fled on foot; officers established perimeter, deployed K9, but did not find suspect; later another squad stopped possible suspect with misdemeanor warrant; victim went to HCMC ° 24th/Central Avs NE: Officers responded to Unknown Trouble call; man grabbing, molesting women; located suspect who was following young women in their cars, waiting for them to exit cars, approaching, grabbing them, offering money: Arrested/ Impact Statements Requested! Please note that the information listed in public records may be false or inaccurate, and that a margin of error may exist in the reporting, transcribing or printing of these records. If someone listed here lives near you, you may check the previous criminal history of the person at this website using his name and birth date. Many of the addresses criminals give as their residence are rental units. And many of these property owners do not do background checks before they rent to someone. In addition, many times these properties do not even have a valid rental license. If you would like to check the ownership of a property, get the contact information of the property owner, or check if it is licensed for rental, click here: http://apps.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/AddressApp/SearchByAddress.aspx?AppID=P... If you find a property that is being used as a rental but not licensed, please call 311. Information presented in this order: Booking number, Name (last/first/middle), Address of Arrestee, Date of Birth, Date and Time of Arrest, Previous Convictions if any found, Property Owner of Arrestee’s Address, and Current Charges against Arrestee. Make sure you let the property owners know your concern about them housing criminals next door to you. Please don’t let them get away with profiting at your expense. The 2nd Precinct CLEAN sheet gives names, pictures and other information about the Eastside’s top 13 problem people. The purpose of the list is to keep the public informed as to the custodial, probationary and warrant statuses of our area's chronic livability offenders. The inclusion of photos will also allow people to associate names with faces and assist in our efforts to gather community impact statements for court. Remember that the people on the list are not necessarily wanted by the police and citizens should not call 911 on those individuals without active warrants. Here is the link to view the latest CLEAN sheet. ----------------------------------------------- I just had a meeting with Mark Bellestri, NE resident and owner of Pop-A-Lock. These statements are submitted to city/county attorneys or other appropriate officials to help the courts make decisions about sentences for offenders convicted of the crimes. Impact statements may provide information that will not be found in police reports. Who can write a statement? When I have an opportunity to submit a Community Impact Statement on a crime or an arrestee, how do I find out? If you are signed up for the email crime alert program from the Minneapolis Police Department, your Crime Prevention Specialist will occasionally send information about individuals with open cases and will direct you to the City Attorney’s website to complete a community impact statement on a misdemeanor crime or the County Attorney’s website to complete a community impact statement on a felony. You may also go to the city and county attorneys’ websites and review the information. The City Attorney’s webpage is at: The County Attorney’s webpage is at: http://www.hennepinattorney.org/cpMapMinneapolisNeighborhood.aspx?prec=2 The Hennepin County Attorney’s website also allows you to provide feedback on crime in your community, not connecting the information to a specific case. To sign up for the email crime alerts from the Police Department: http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/police/crimealert/signup.asp When you sign up, you will receive information on community impact statements along with crime alerts, seasonal tips, highlights in the police department, and notices about safety programs in your neighborhood. You will receive about 1 – 2 emails each week. What type of cases may I submit a statement about? The City Attorney’s system contains only misdemeanor cases prosecuted by the City of Minneapolis. Most of the cases involve livability issues such as: Consuming in public, public urination, loitering with intent to buy or sell narcotics, lurking, and disorderly conduct. The Hennepin County system contains information about felony cases such as: Murder, Felony drug possession, Felony property cases, Weapons, Property Damage. Hard Copy of Impact Statement. more ways of protection outside your home
Hello. Thanks a lot for this useful information. It's very importantwhat you say about garage break-ins. Wanted to add several ways of protection outside your home. Burglars always assess a target before attempting entry. They prefer properties where the trees and bushes offer somewhere to hide. So, cut back the lower branches of any trees and prune all bushes. Keep good sight lines to the windows and doors from the road. Depending on the size of your yard and the amount of street lighting, consider the cost of installing external lights and leave them on at night. You should also remove anything like a tree or trellis that could be used to climb up to the second storey. Similarly, secure any ladders in a locked shed. As a deterrent, plant bushes with thorns close to the house and in front of the windows. The next step up in cost are motion sensors to sweep the yard and the areas in front of the windows and doors. One more thing about all the protection measures, is that they can help you reduce homeowners insurance premiums. Invite your home insurance agent to view all the protective measures and negotiate a discount.
