Basketball Game Ends in Gunfire

The StarTribune reports of a shooting last night at Northeast Park’s rec center:

An argument over a basketball game at a northeast Minneapolis recreation center flared out of control when someone pulled a gun, leaving one young man shot in the torso and sending about 20 kids fleeing for cover.

The Northeast Recreation Center on the 1600 block of Pierce St. N.E. was packed with a group of kids who regularly showed up Thursday nights to play basketball, watch movies and play video games during teen night. Shortly after 7 p.m., a fight broke out during a basketball game, police said.

Lt. Robert Goodsell of the Minneapolis Park Police said at least one shot was fired, hitting a male teen, who was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Several parents who gathered outside the center shortly after the shooting said the park has been a favorite gathering place for their children and they have never been concerned about their safety. They did say they have been concerned that a lack of activities in other parts of the city has attracted kids to their center.
