Avoid Becoming a Robbery Victim

Several of the south side neighborhoods recently suffering burglaries are also afflicted with a rash of armed robberies. The StarTribune story offers safety tips from MPD Commander Lucy Gerold. If you are unable to join an upcoming safety workshop, at least keep these in mind when out and about:

  • [W]alk in pairs and take the most direct routes to [your] destinations.
  • Carry money and keys in pockets and not in purses and wallets.
  • There is no obligation to respond when an unfamiliar person approaches and asks for directions, money or the time.
  • If you are being followed by somebody in a car, turn around and quickly walk in the opposite direction. If possible, get the license number and description of the vehicle and driver and call 911.
  • If somebody is following you on foot, turn around, immediately cross the street and walk or run to a place where there are other people, then call police.
