Lax Landlords Suffer Tenant Scams

Reporter Tom Lyden at Fox9-TV filed this investigative report on tenants who scam landlords. It seems some renters have learned to use tenant-friendly provisions of the law to live rent-free. As one Northeast landlord says, “they're stealing shelter.”

Landlords are forced evict the deadbeat tenants, adding court costs and major repair bills to their losses from unpaid rent. The report concludes that new or naive landlords miss a simple step which would protect their investment from this type of scam. A simple background check would have revealed that the tenants in the report had extensive patterns of property abuse in their rental histories.

Let me reiterate the point

Let me reiterate the point to landlords, "Do a Background Check!" It's also important to see a drivers license, and to have a detailed rental application, mine is three pages long, and finally, have a strong lease that calls for immediate eviction for every possible infraction, including being arrested.

And every landlord should be part of the police departments Virtual Block Club list.
